About GuessMyCity
GuessMyCity is a small, independent set of daily puzzles. It turns cities’ own open data into games you can finish in two minutes.
Data and sources
- NYC 311 Service Requests (NYC Open Data, Sep 29, 2026–Oct 28, 2026), NYC Open Data terms of use.
- 2015 Street Tree Census (NYC Parks via NYC Open Data, 652,168 living street trees), NYC Open Data terms of use.
- Chicago 311 Service Requests (Chicago Data Portal, Sep 30, 2026–Oct 29, 2026, duplicates and information-only calls excluded) and community area names, City of Chicago data terms.
- MTA Subway Hourly Ridership: Beginning 2025 (Sep 24, 2026–Oct 21, 2026; 20 weekdays, 8 weekend days) and MTA Subway Stations / complexes, via data.ny.gov (subject to the data.ny.gov terms of use). Ridership counts OMNY and MetroCard entries (taps/swipes), not exits.
- CTA Ridership: L Station Entries, Daily Totals (Jun 1, 2026–Aug 31, 2026) and CTA List of L Stops, Chicago Data Portal, City of Chicago data terms. Entries are rail boardings counted at the turnstile.
Numbers are aggregated by community district (NYC) or community area (Chicago) and refreshed on a schedule. Distances use the average location of each area’s records. NYC district names follow the Department of City Planning descriptions, shortened.
What it is not
Not affiliated with any city, 311, NYC Parks, the MTA or the CTA. Not a safety or real-estate rating: 311 measures who reports, not only what happens. Clues leave out request types that could stigmatize a neighborhood (e.g. homelessness, drug activity).
